Convert To Self-Employment

A lot of people decide to get into plumbing so they can become self-employed and control their own destiny. Generally speaking most newly trained plumbers over thirty go for domestic work that they can take care of by themselves. When you look at the kind of jobs that are around for anyone who's got a decent work ethic, it's a sensible move.

As with all the trades, good plumbers pick up a lot of their business via recommendations from satisfied customers. Your technical skills will be gained through study and practical application, but you might also need to polish up your people skills. (After all you never know who's considering your services!) Politeness and good manners will always be remembered.

More often than not, plumbers in the commercial environment are employed to work a maximum forty hour week. Domestic plumbers are best not to restrict themselves too rigidly though. Working people will want to get to know you first before leaving you in their homes unaccompanied.

A Job For Life

If security and a decent income are high on your agenda, you must have skills that everybody needs. Good plumbers fit that bill. You'll find the work rewarding - people are always grateful when you fix their problems or make life easier for them. The fact that you're moving around working in different properties all the time makes the work really interesting as well.

When you're working for yourself you have to know how to price jobs properly. As well as your time, you have to include your overheads and any materials that will be needed. You might like to work out a system to account for all your fixed costs. Private training companies sometimes feature a course on working for yourself.

The Right Course For You...

All industry recognised plumbing training courses lead to C&G (City & Guilds) certifications as a minimum. Youngsters generally try to find a company to work with so they can complete NVQ qualifications alongside their C&G's.

It's the private training companies that tend to attract mature entrants, because they service their needs better. Private colleges will cost more initially, but the student looking for domestic self-employed work will gain relevant skill-sets much faster, and start generating income within months, not years.

Additional Skills

Whichever course you decide on, you should emerge with at least basic plumbing skills in sanitation systems, hot and cold water systems and more. But if you increase your skill-set you can take on many more roles. Some plumbers can also do tiling, plastering and some electrical work.

You'll find it easier to build your reputation if you provide some extra bolt-ons. Your work will be more evenly spread all year round. If you can take on small electrical tasks or handle gas whilst you're on a job, you won't waste time working to someone else's calendar.

To round up, if you're looking to work for yourself in private housing the most effective route will be via a specialist plumbing training company.
